About Brother's Make: 

In our little workshop down on the south coast of the UK, we’ve got a four-person strong team, with the unequivocal might of a small, planet-loving army. Each of us are unique and weird in our own way, but what does unite us is a burning passion for all things sustainable. And as cringey as it might sound, we do try to think of ‘The Planet’ a fifth member of the team, so that we can run all of our business decisions ‘through’ them to ensure they’re aligned with our overall mission and reason for being.

All of our products are made from 100% recycled plastic. All the materials that we use are collected by our wonderful friends, family, the local community, businesses and schools. We meticulously clean every piece of plastic that comes to us before hand-sorting it by type and colour. This is by far the longest part of the process, and while it’s by no means the funnest, it is absolutely critical to ensure it is both safe to recycle as well as let the product be recycled again and again in the future. Then comes the fun part of shredding it all down and turning this material into brand new products. And the lovely thing about working with recycled plastic, is that 100% of the waste that is produced can be collected and reused - circular economy, baby.

These are ethically made in Mumbai, India. They are part of a venture by a young female entrepreneur who had a vision to use up the cities newspaper waste and help local women at the same time.

The project employs women and gives them a stable income, as well as a good working environment.

Therefore these pencils are not only useful, perfect for creative expression, an innovative use of a waste material, but they’re also doing a lot of good- improving the lives of women in a country that is struggling to look after its 1 billion + citizens.

Why we love beeswax wraps at L+J: Cling film is seen as a necessity for preserving foods - but now you can make an easy swap! Although not suitable for raw meats and fish (put them in tupperware!), it is great for everything else.

How to use them? The wrap will just stick to itself (like cling film) Made from natural ingredients, they respond to their environment. If it is warmer they typically feel softer, if colder they may feel harder and not as sticky.

How to Use
Use the warmth of your hands to press and mould your wrap firmly around the item to be stored. Place the wrapped item in the refrigerator or take them with you on the go for your sandwiches and rolls.

How to Clean
Wash your beeswax wraps in COOL WATER with eco-friendly dish soap. Rinse and air dry before storing in your kitchen draw. The natural coating on your wrap will dissolve in alcohol so check your dish washing liquid before washing your wraps.

Avoid Heat
Because beeswax wraps are made from natural beeswax they need to be kept away from all sources of heat, including hot water, steam, hot food and flames. Wait until the food is cool and then cover with it with your wrap. Avoid putting them in the dishwasher, microwave oven, or anywhere they can get hot.

Summer Time Caution
Avoid leaving beeswax wraps in hot places such as direct sunlight or in a parked car. In hot weather, please keep wrapped items such as sandwiches, cut vegetables, fruit or cheese, in an esky with an ice pack.

How Long Does Beeswax Wrap Last
If you follow these care instructions, your beeswax wrap will last up to a year. With day to day use, stains and creases may appear, but these don’t affect your wraps ability to do their job.

This summer we launched a giveaway competition on our social media. The competition was to create a design to be printed onto some tote bags with the theme zero-waste, saving the planet, and all things Lemon & Jinja. We had so many incredible entries and it was so hard to choose one winner... so we picked two.

These bags are handmade by Susan Opok in Uganda. Jess first met her in 2011 and they have always chatted about setting up a business together. When Lemon & Jinja started they created Nyabo, a kitenge business making bespoke products. The pattern is called ‘Kitenge’ and is East African.  Each sale from the Nyabo range makes a huge impact to Susan and the work she does in Uganda.
