Organic Pearl Barley
From £0.36 GBP
Unit price perOrganic Pearl Barley
From £0.36 GBP
Unit price perPearl barley is harvested from ears of barley, and is polished or 'pearled' which removes the outer bran to give the grain a shiny appearance. (If only the hull is removed, and is not pearled, it is known as 'hulled barley')
Pearl barley has a neutral-cereal taste. The grains also thicken soups and stews, imparting a creaminess which means that the liquid coats the back of a spoon.
How to cook: Rinse the pearl barley, then cook at a gentle simmer for around 30 minutes. Cooking can be accelerated by using a pressure cooker.

Top tip: If you don't want the barley to thicken the soup or stew, boil it in water first for 20-30 mins, and rinse first before using.
Allergens: gluten, barley

Organic Popcorn Kernels
From £0.42 GBP
Unit price perOrganic Popcorn Kernels
From £0.42 GBP
Unit price perPopcorn kernels are a specific type of dried popping corn, so we're sorry but you can't just dry and cook regular shop-bought corn to get popcorn.
Within each kernel of dried popcorn there is still moisture. During the heating process, the moisture becomes pressurized steam, and once enough pressure builds, the hulls rupture. An airy foam is produced from the starch contained in the kernel, which cools quickly into the popcorn puff we know.
The most common method of popping popcorn kernels is heating up some oil in a dry pan (a wet pan will make the oil spit) before adding the popcorn kernals, covering, and waiting for those pops! Simply toss in your favourite topping, whether it be the classic salty, sugar/sugar syrup, chilli flakes, or cinnamon. We love melting a bit of marmite with vegan butter (or regular butter if you fancy) and mixing it in with the popcorn. Get creative!
Top tip: To stop the kernels burning on the bottom of the pan, follow this linked method from Simply recipes to show you how.

Organic Raw Cacao Powder
From £1.92 GBP
Unit price perOrganic Raw Cacao Powder
From £1.92 GBP
Unit price perOrganic raw cacao powder stemming from cacao beans of the Cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). Cacao beans grow within cacao pods that are a variety of beautiful reds, yellows, greens and blues, which hang from the tree. Each pod contains 20-60 beans surrounded by the tart-sweet sticky cacao flesh, or 'fruit.'
'Is this not the same as cocoa powder?!' we hear you say...
No they are not. Both raw cacao powder and cocoa powder originate from the same beans, however differences come from the taste, nutritional value and texture - all to do with how the cacao bean is processes.
Cacao is lighter in colour, more fruity in flavour, and closer to its natural state than cocoa powder.
Cocoa is darker in colour, and has an extra processing step of roasting at high temperatures, which also decreases its nutritional value.
Health benefits of cacao include a rich source of antioxidant, a huge amount of magnesium, along with many other essential vitamins and minerals.
FUN FACT: It has so many health supporting properties and is highly valued, so it was before used as a form of currency, and there are actually vaults of raw cacao buried all over the world.
Unless otherwise stated, we always get this product supplied from The Raw Chocolate Company, who source their ingredients ethically and 'prioritise making a positive impact on the world'.
Organic Red Split Lentils
From £0.35 GBP
Unit price perOrganic Red Split Lentils
From £0.35 GBP
Unit price perRed split lentils, also known as Egyptian lentil or Masoor dal, are cheap, nutritous, delicious and very easy to make - no soaking required. They are the easiest to cook out of the lentil family, and as they are split naturally into two halves, they cook very quickly.
Lentils are edible seeds of the legume family. These are high in fibre, folate, potassium, iron and B1, and a great source of plant-based protein, including essential amino acids.
How to cook: Rinse lentils, put in a pan with water and bring to the boil. The easiest way to cook them is to check on them as you cook, and stop at your desired texture. For estimates, simmer for around 15 minutes into a thick purée, or 25 minutes will give you a mush. Use them for soups and spicy Indian dhals.
Example recipes:
Try this Red lentil curry from Rainbow plant life or this Red lentil dahl from Bianca Zapatka.
Or fancy a warming and nutritous soup, try this feel-good red lentil soup from frommybowl.
Top tips for cooking lentils:
A squeeze of lemon juice can brighten their earthy flavourf adding acidic ingredients, but aciic ingredients such as this should be added after cooking.
Salt should be added at the end of cooking, not during.
Do not cook lentils in aluminium or cast iron pans, as these metals can inhibit the cooking and affect the colour and/or taste of the lentils.

About seaweed - how does it work?!
This is taken from Shropshire Seaweed themselves: Seaweeds are some of the quickest growing plants on the planet with some species expanding by several feet in length every day. This growth is driven by the presence of hormones called auxins and cytokinins. Luckily for the gardener or horticulturalist, these active elements can be harnessed for use on practically any plant by using distilled seaweed fertilizer.
Regular application of seaweed fertilizer encourages growth in plants, grass, trees, fruits and vegetables. On top of this, seaweed contains some of the widest variety of macro and micro nutrients in the world which it draws in from its marine environment. These help to provide plants with a range and variety of the nutrients they need to thrive.
Besides the growth stimulants and wide range of nutrients, seaweed has also been shown to have an impact of the health and composition of root zones and boost chlorophyll levels in plants.
How to use the fertiliser: Mix The Shropshire Seaweed Company Organic Fertilizer with water at the rates given below. Please note that 0.1% is equivalent to 1ml of seaweed in 1l of water. Use as a foliar spray or a root drench, whichever suits the job best. And remember, little and often is the way with seaweed.
Store in a cool place out of direct sunlight. Use within two years of opening for best results.
SEEDS + SEEDLINGS
Soak your seeds in a weak concentration of The Shropshire Seaweed Company Organic Fertilizer and water (0.1%) for up to 12 hours before sowing. This will boost their germination by up to 80%. When transplanting seedings, dip their roots in a stronger seaweed extract solution (0.2%) to help their roots adjust to their new pot. Once the seedlings are three weeks old, they are ready for their first foliar feed. Again, use the 0.2% mix and mist them all over. Using seaweed at these three crucial stages lays the foundation for healthy and strong plants in the long-term.
HYDROPONICS
Hydroponics is a rapidly expanding sector on the British growing landscape - and here too seaweed extract is a very beneficial supplement. The Shropshire Seaweed Company Organic Fertilizer should be added at a rate of 0.05% every seven days. Combine with a two-weekly foliar spray of the crops themselves at a rate of 0.2%
GRAZING
The Shropshire Seaweed Company Organic Fertilizer is a low-cost way of keeping the grass in good condition for your animals. It's also totally organic and offers no threat to the health of horses, cows or sheep. You don't even need to clear them out of the field to apply it. Mix 2l of Shropshire Seaweed per acre (or 5l per hectare) and dilute at a rate of 1% with water. Apply evenly across the area once or twice a year for optimum results.
