Sustainable sunglasses / glasses retainer strap hand-made from fishing nets recovered from beach cleans of the Cornish coastline.

A secure, sustainable and adjustable eyewear retainer strap compatible with Waterhaul sunglasses and prescription glasses frames.

Handmade in Looe, Cornwall, by Behaviour Change Cornwall, using ghost fishing nets collected from the Cornish coast. Finished with stainless steel beads, engraved with a batch number used to trace where the net has been recovered from.

Custom-made to fit the entire Waterhaul frame range, and the adjustable loop design means they should fit with most other eyewear frames too.

- The length of the strap can be adjusted, depending on if you want a tighter fit behind your head, or a looser fit while your sunglasses are hanging around your neck.

- Straps can be positioned in front of or behind the ear on the temple of the frame, depending on personal preference.- Each eyewear strap has come from a specific ghost fishing net, collected from the Cornish coastline by Behaviour Change Cornwall, represented by a batch number that has been laser engraved into the stainless steel beads on each strap.

- Our current batches include 001 (black) collected from Perranporth Beach, and 002 (green) collected from Kynance Cove.

How to refresh your wrap

TIPS

• Chill the refresher block in the fridge overnight to make it easier to grate/slice. (Be careful of your fingers when cutting the block!)
• Be careful not to spread over the edge of the grease-proof paper onto the iron!
• Store left over wax in the box.
• Clean the grater with hot water from the kettle, do this outside on grass or soil as wax will solidify in your sink/drain!

• You need

  • An old towel
  • Kitchen Grater
  • Iron (steam off, medium/high setting)
  • 2 x grease-proof paper or parchment paper (5cm larger than the wrap, keep to reuse)
  • 1 x refresher block

  Iron Method

  1. Grate as much of the beeswax block needed for the repair (tip: chill block in the fridge overnight before grating)
  2. Protect your work surface or ironing board with an old towel
  3. Place your first sheet of baking paper on the protected surface
  4. Lay a square of fabric on top
  5. Spread the grated wax, evenly, over the area needing repaired or the whole wrap if refreshing a well used wrap. If difficult to grate, place block back in the fridge
  6. Place the second sheet of baking paper on the fabric
  7. Gently press the hot iron on the parchment layers, keep iron moving. Use the iron to spread the melted wax over the repair area or full wrap
  8. Once the wrap looks all wet and covered gently lift top sheet (place sheet to one side, wet side up)
  9. Pick up the wrap by two corners and waft for 30 seconds until dry
  10. Your wrap is now good to go

Why we love beeswax wraps at L+J: Cling film is seen as a necessity for preserving foods - but now you can make an easy swap! Although not suitable for raw meats and fish (put them in tupperware!), it is great for everything else.

How to use them? The wrap will just stick to itself (like cling film) Made from natural ingredients, they respond to their environment. If it is warmer they typically feel softer, if colder they may feel harder and not as sticky.

How to Use
Use the warmth of your hands to press and mould your wrap firmly around the item to be stored. Place the wrapped item in the refrigerator or take them with you on the go for your sandwiches and rolls.

How to Clean
Wash your beeswax wraps in COOL WATER with eco-friendly dish soap. Rinse and air dry before storing in your kitchen draw. The natural coating on your wrap will dissolve in alcohol so check your dish washing liquid before washing your wraps.

Avoid Heat
Because beeswax wraps are made from natural beeswax they need to be kept away from all sources of heat, including hot water, steam, hot food and flames. Wait until the food is cool and then cover with it with your wrap. Avoid putting them in the dishwasher, microwave oven, or anywhere they can get hot.

Summer Time Caution
Avoid leaving beeswax wraps in hot places such as direct sunlight or in a parked car. In hot weather, please keep wrapped items such as sandwiches, cut vegetables, fruit or cheese, in an esky with an ice pack.

How Long Does Beeswax Wrap Last
If you follow these care instructions, your beeswax wrap will last up to a year. With day to day use, stains and creases may appear, but these don’t affect your wraps ability to do their job.

These bags are handmade by Susan Opok in Uganda. Jess first met her in 2011 and they have always chatted about setting up a business together. When Lemon & Jinja started they created Nyabo, a kitenge business making bespoke products. The pattern is called ‘Kitenge’ and is East African.  Each sale from the Nyabo range makes a huge impact to Susan and the work she does in Uganda.
